    I still can't believe it

I have never used a safety razor before, so this is my first razor of this type and I have just completed my first shave with it. I'm still in disbelief how much better, smoother, and non irritating this shave was compared to a cartridge razor (and I thought I was using the best product the money could buy). I have read a lot of articles comparing safety razors with cartridge razors, but I thought it was just a marketing gimmick. Was I wrong!!! This razor is absolutely stunning in appearance and craftmanship. It simply doesn't allow a bad shave, the way it is constructed, it assures always the right angle between the skin and the blade. As I mentioned above, the results with the included blade (Merkur's own platinum made in Germany) provides absolutely effortless, smooth cutting without any irritation. I have always had problems with my neck getting razor burn if I really wanted a close shave. With the cartridge razor I had to consequently settle on only one pass on my neck with the grain, which left visible hair in place compared to the other areas of my face. With my new Merkur Progress, I was able to adjust to setting 1 and go against the grain on my neck with absolutely no irritation and end up with the closest shaved neck I've ever had. Again, I'm so impressed. I love the adjustable feature. Makes a difference on longer hair (higher number) gets a closer cut, then against the grain (lower number) gets a close irritation free shave against the grain and on extra sensitive areas (all the way to setting 1) super smooth irritation free results. I just can't rave enough about this razor. Thank you for carrying this outstanding product!!! What a huge PROGRESS I have just made in my grooming! :-)

typical german craftsmanship in how well made. gives very smooth results.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MERKUR/SOLINGEN Merkur/Solingen was founded in 1896 by Emil Hermes but, because there are already other cutlery companies in Solingen with the name of Hermes, he registers the brand name as MERKUR, the Roman equivalent of the messenger of the gods, Hermes. The first razors for wet shaving already featured a safety comb, into which was clipped a removable wedge-shaped blade. Shortened to 4 cm, it was similar in form to a classic straight razor blade. However, it needed to be regularly sharpened. At the beginning of the 20th century, production began on very sharp, double edge razor blades, similar to those produced today. They reduced the risk of injury and when they were blunt they were cheap to replace. Over the years, MERKUR patented several of its models. The double edge blade razors were stamped with “Made in Solingen” and “Germany”. As a very classic product, the razor’s design, packaging and advertising still reflect the tastes of the past. In 1996 the company is sold to Merkur’s biggest client DOVO/Solingen. Since then the traditional production of double edge blade razors carrying the brand name MERKUR continues under the same roof as the equally traditional production of straight razor from DOVO/Solingen.
